Stiff competition for Karamanolis

Marcus Karamanolis will face some imported talent in the College Sport Wellington secondary schools cross-country championships at Trentham this afternoon.

His rivals in the 6km senior division will include promising Napier Boys' High School runner Christian Leopard.

Leopard is among four Napier runners who will compete today, to aid their preparation for the national schools championships in Palmerston North next month.

Leopard, a year 12 pupil, finished third, one place in front of Karamanolis, in a quality field for the senior 3000m at the North Island secondary schools track and field meeting at Masterton in April.

There was also little between them in the senior 1500m at Masterton, with Karamanolis fifth and Leopard sixth.

Karamanolis (St Pat's Town) shapes as the leading contender for the boys open title and a win would bookend his school career with cross-country titles.

He won the junior title in 2010 and though he has not managed another win since, he has never finished further back than third.

He was the runner-up in the intermediate division in 2011 and has finished third in the senior field for the past two years. He chased Kieron McDonald and Nick Pointon home in 2012 and ran third to Tim Robertson and Nathan Tse last year. None who have finished ahead of him in the past two years will be competing today.

Karamanolis has also performed with distinction at the national secondary schools championships each year and finished fifth in the senior section last year, in a field of 245.

He has been satisfied with his form going into today's race. "I'm pretty fit and the training has been going really well."

He has been prominent in a series of club relay events, though he was not entirely happy with his third, behind Robertson and Tse, in the under-20 division in the Vosseler Shield last weekend. "I went out a bit hard but I have learnt from that.

"But I haven't run over 6km for a while and it's going to be as good buildup to the nationals. That will probably be the biggest race of the season."

Karamanolis, 17, has also competed at the Australian junior cross-country championships for the past two years, finishing in the top 20 both times, but will not be making the trip to Perth for the 2014 meeting.

Scots College will have a strong team in the senior boys today, including Tom Caughley, who won the under-18 division at the Vosseler, Max Zorn, Callum Stewart, and Simeo Pont.

Riva Williams (Wellington College), Faiyeung Szeto (Wellington College), Mitchell Rutter (Otaki) and Stefan Przychodzko (Paraparaumu) are also likely to be prominent and Karamanolis expects his Town team-mates Rusi Jagose-Dickens and Harry Burnard to run well.

The Wellington East pair of Kelsey Forman - bronze medallist in the junior division at the national championships last year - and Amelia Harris are among the leading chances for the senior girls today. Alisha Gilchrist (Onslow). Monique Robinson (Kapiti) and Phoebe van Boheemen (Queen Margaret) also have solid credentials.

2014 Vosseler Shield Mt Victoria Wellington Sat 24 May

“Mountain racing has quite a history on Mt Victoria. Every year the Vosseler Shield takes place up, over and around the peak. It was named after Frederick Vosseler, a prominent Wellington businessman early last century, who helped found the Wellington Harrier Club in 1903.

In 1923 he presented the Vosseler Shield to his old running club for an annual crosscountry race. Vosseler was also a keen tramper, and there is a Mt Victoria connection there too. He helped form the Tararua Tramping Club in 1919 and when he died in 1959 he left the Club enough money to purchase the old Seventh Day Adventist church hall in Moncrieff Street, which is still the Club headquarters.

The Vosseler shield mountain race is an annual event. It starts down by the Badminton Hall on the far side of Mt Victoria, winds its way up and down past the cycling velodrome and then up the steep track to Alexandra Road, up the grass verge beside the road and then sharply downhill to the little park at the top of Majoribanks Street and then along tracks back up to Alexandra Road.

It then winds back down through various tracks to the site of the old military and public works camp near the bottom of Alexandra Road. Then they do another lap, before finishing back at the old camp site.

In its early days the Vosseler Shield race started at Lyall Bay and went around the hills above Moa point. It became a Mt Victoria event in the 1950s, when Wellington Harriers shifted their clubrooms, firstly to Evans Bay, and then to its present site on Alexandra Road.”

The race yesterday was held in wet and windy conditions that were the opposite of last week's pristine conditions at QEII Park. The wet weather would have made the tracks on Mt Victoria treacherous in places which would have resulted in slower times. The winner of the Senior Men's race was Cameron Goldsmid who appeared to navigate the two 5k laps with consummate ease. The Senior Women's race was won by Tina Harris who is having a good season so far this year.
